Major Mac Virus has arrived!

The honeymoon is over Mac users. 600,000 Macs may be infected with a new virus as of this writing. Mac Flashback Trojan is affecting users using Java for OSX. If you haven’t run a software update yet for your Mac, go to the Apple Menu, (TOP LEFT of your screen) and select Software Update… to update your machine. Once this is done, go to the trusted site below from f-secure and follow the instructions which will check to see if you have the virus and how to remove it.

The New iPad: 2048 x 1536 – better resolution than your HDTV.

Apple’s new iPad has definitely lived up to the rumors. Better camera (5mb), 4G LTE support, and a ‘Retina’ display which basically means at 15 inches you can’t see any dots on the screen, thus making it better quality than your HDTV. It also has an upgraded camera, speech to text functionality and is running a quad core processor – making this truly the first iPad device allowing you to create content rather than just consume it.

Definitely a great product from Apple, blowing the doors off of any other tablet to date. If you have waited to buy an iPad until now, pull the trigger on this one. Same price point as the former two ipads during their initial release ($499 for 16GB model), but allowing you to do so much more, so much better and faster. There are quite a few new features, but these are some of the big imporvements.

My only concern would be with storage. When you start using this for creating content, and taking into account the screen resolution is twice as good as the iPad 2, what sort of file sizes are we going to start seeing. An iPad doesn’t have a way to expand physical storage with an SD Card so you’ll need to rely on the cloud to move files off the device. Which is fine and I would encourage this for a number of reasons, but actual apps may be larger as well and these can’t be stored anywhere else but on the iPad. All things we’ll find out soon enough.

As for me as an iPad 1 owner, I don’t have much reason to upgrade at the current time. It works great for all that I do and unless I chuck it off the side of the building, accidentally of course, I can’t justify the upgrade. Uh, hum… Not yet anyway…

New iPad release looming

If you head out to the online Apple Store today you may notice a slight temporary change – see attached picture. Why? We are minutes away from the next iPad announcement! Will it be called the iPad 3 or maybe the iPad HD. Either way the consensus is that it will have a retina display, possibly a quad core processor, and likely a better camera. Price – unchanged. We’ll just have to wait and see what they announce and I’ll post back the official details

To follow along with the announcement you won’t be able to see the keynote speech as that is not permitted. But Gizmodo has a live, sort of play-by-play blog – link below. Boy I’m a geek…

Sharepoint and Folder Metadata – It is Possible!

I was recently presented with an issue while using Sharepoint WSS – how to organize folders based on an ordering system of my choosing. Well typically sharepoint folders can’t be organized other than alpha or numeric but I did stumble across this blog by the Sharepoint Guru which describes in detail how to set up ‘Organized Folders’ which has been a huge benefit to my users. They can now sort folders within a document library based on any criteria they choose. Here is a link to the dated yet still relevant article!

How Secure is Your Wireless Network

One thing I’ve learned working in the IT field is that you can never be too secure. Make sure you have a strong password, only visit sites you trust and never open attachments in your email even if you know the sender. So many viruses ‘spoof’ an email address of someone you know, luring you in to clicking on an innocent ‘postcard’ or something like that which you think is from a friend.

Your password should change every so often, should never be used for multiple web sites and to be strong should take on the industry standard for passwords. That is, it should be at least 8 characters long, contain a capital letter, a lowercase letter and a number. Leo Laporte, host of the National Radio show ‘The Tech Guy,’ suggests using a line from a favorite song, taking the first letter of each word to which combines into gibberish to the unbeknownst but to you makes sense. And more importantly, is nearly impossible to crack as it isn’t a dictionary word.

Lastly, if you have a wireless router at home, make sure you have WPA2 encryption turned on. WEP is no longer secure and can actually be cracked with free tools available over the internet in a matter of minutes.

Hosting and Domain Help

The one thing most people will need when setting up a website is a place to host their site and a relevant domain name. When a designer such as myself builds your site, the site is made up of images and files that are the building block of your site. These elements need to live somewhere on the World Wide Web so that others can find them. That is where a Web Host comes in. You typically pay them a monthly fee for space on a server. The designer will upload your files to the server and now they are basically a website.

You’ll want to also pick a good domain name that is relevant to your business (i.e. www.viziblee.com or www.nebraska.gov). Most Web Hosts also provide a way to register a domain name. Most domains will run you less than $20 per year.

These are the basic steps involved in the process of designing a site. Of course there are details like how the site is built, if it is using a CMS (Content Management System), does it render appropriately on a mobile device, and is it searchable in Google. iPhone 4s has arrived and is in my hand!

I feel very fortunate to have the new iPhone, the 4s. Siri is amazing and has proved ‘her’ usefulness as filling in as my virtual secretary. Siri can assign appointments, get clients on the phone for me, and send messages all via my voice commands. More research to come…
